If some rooms have weak or no Wi-Fi, you’ve got three main options — and they’re not equal. Here’s what each does and which fixes dead zones best.

A single router

Your router broadcasts Wi-Fi from one spot. In a small apartment that’s plenty. In a larger or multi-floor home, the signal weakens with distance and walls, leaving dead zones no matter how good the router is — one radio can only reach so far.

Wi-Fi extender (repeater)

An extender rebroadcasts your existing signal to stretch coverage. It’s cheap and easy, but has real downsides: it often halves throughput (it talks to your router and your device on the same radio), creates a second network name you have to switch between, and only works well if placed where the signal is still decent. Fine for pushing Wi-Fi to one stubborn corner; not great as a whole-home fix.

Mesh Wi-Fi

A mesh system uses multiple units (nodes) that blanket your home in one seamless network. Your phone hands off between nodes automatically as you move, and good mesh systems use a dedicated backhaul so speed holds up better than an extender. It’s the best fix for medium-to-large homes with multiple dead zones — at a higher price.

Which should you choose?

  • Small home, one weak spot: a better router or a single extender.
  • Larger/multi-floor home, several dead zones: mesh — seamless coverage and better sustained speed.

Bottom line: extenders are a cheap patch that can cost you speed; mesh is the proper whole-home solution. Match the fix to the size of the problem — and remember placement matters as much as the hardware.
