Every new router box shouts a Wi-Fi generation at you, and the numbers keep climbing faster than most homes can use them. Wi-Fi 6 is still excellent for the vast majority of people, and Wi-Fi 7 is genuinely a leap in a few specific situations. The trick is knowing which of those situations is yours before you pay for the newer badge.

The names, translated

“Wi-Fi 6” is the friendly label for the 802.11ax standard; “Wi-Fi 7” is 802.11be. There’s also Wi-Fi 6E, which is plain Wi-Fi 6 with access to the newer 6 GHz band added on. That 6 GHz band matters more than the generation number for a lot of real-world speed, because it’s wide, modern, and not yet crowded with old devices and neighbours.

What Wi-Fi 7 actually adds

Three changes do the heavy lifting. Wider channels (up to 320 MHz, double Wi-Fi 6E’s maximum) move more data at once. Denser signalling (4096-QAM versus 1024-QAM) squeezes more bits into each transmission. And Multi-Link Operation, the headline feature, lets a device talk on two bands at the same time instead of picking one, which cuts lag and adds resilience when a band gets congested.

On paper this pushes theoretical peaks into multi-gigabit territory. In practice you only see it with a Wi-Fi 7 client device, a short clear path to the router, and often a wired internet connection fast enough to feed it.

Where you’ll notice a difference — and where you won’t

If your internet plan is 300–500 Mbps and you mostly stream, browse, and video-call, Wi-Fi 6 already saturates that comfortably. Upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 will not make Netflix sharper or a webpage load faster, because the bottleneck is your incoming connection, not the air.

You will notice Wi-Fi 7 if you have a gigabit-or-faster internet plan, move large files between devices on your own network, run a busy household of dozens of simultaneous devices, or care about the lower, steadier latency that Multi-Link Operation brings to gaming and VR.

The catch: it takes two to tango

A Wi-Fi standard is only as good as the weakest end of the link. A Wi-Fi 7 router talking to a Wi-Fi 6 phone communicates at Wi-Fi 6 speeds. Since most phones, laptops, and tablets in a typical home are a year or more old, the fancy router spends most of its time serving older clients at older speeds. This is the single biggest reason the upgrade underwhelms people.

How to decide

Buy for the band, not the number. If you’re on a fast plan and want future-proofing, a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router with 6 GHz support is a sound long-term choice. If your plan is under about 500 Mbps and your devices are typical, a solid Wi-Fi 6 router — or better placement and a mesh node for dead spots — will do more for your day-to-day experience than chasing the latest generation. Coverage problems are almost never fixed by a bigger number on the box; they’re fixed by getting a strong signal to where you actually sit.
