Bluetooth Versions Explained: What Changed from 4.0 to 5.4
Every gadget lists a Bluetooth version, but what do the numbers mean? Here’s what actually changed — and what doesn’t matter as much as you’d think.
The big jump: 4.x to 5.0
Bluetooth 4.0 introduced Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which made wearables, trackers, and sensors possible by sipping power. Bluetooth 5.0 was the next major leap: up to roughly 4× the range and 2× the data speed of 4.2 (for LE), plus better coexistence in crowded wireless environments. Most modern devices are 5.0 or newer.
The 5.x refinements
- 5.1 added direction-finding (helping precise item trackers).
- 5.2 introduced LE Audio and the LC3 codec — better sound at lower bitrates and lower power.
- 5.3 / 5.4 brought efficiency, reliability, and security improvements, plus Auracast broadcast audio (one source streaming to many listeners).
What the version does NOT tell you
Here’s the key point: the Bluetooth version does not set your audio quality. Sound depends on the codec (SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC, LC3) that both devices support, plus the actual hardware. A Bluetooth 5.3 earbud limited to SBC can sound worse than a 5.0 pair with LDAC. Version affects range, efficiency, and features — not fidelity directly.
Compatibility
Bluetooth is backward-compatible: a 5.4 phone pairs fine with 4.2 headphones, but they’ll only use the older shared capabilities. To get a new feature (like LE Audio/Auracast), both devices need to support it.
Bottom line: newer Bluetooth means better range, battery, and features (LE Audio, Auracast) — but for sound quality, look at the supported codecs, not just the version number.
