Headphones advertise “noise cancellation,” but there are two very different ways to block sound — and they work best in different situations. Here’s the difference in plain terms.

Passive noise isolation: a physical seal

Passive isolation is just physics: the ear tips or ear cushions form a seal that physically blocks outside sound. In-ear tips and thick over-ear pads can cut a surprising amount of noise with no electronics at all. Passive isolation is especially good at muffling higher-pitched sounds — voices, clatter, keyboard clicks.

Active noise cancellation (ANC): fighting sound with sound

ANC uses microphones to listen to incoming noise, then plays an inverted “anti-noise” wave through the speakers to cancel it out. It excels at steady, low-frequency drones — jet-engine hum, train rumble, an office HVAC. It’s far less effective at sudden or high-pitched sounds like a nearby conversation.

Feedforward, feedback, and hybrid

ANC differs by where the mics sit. Feedforward mics face outward, feedback mics sit inside near the driver, and hybrid ANC uses both for the best results. Most premium headphones today use hybrid ANC.

Transparency mode

Many ANC headphones also offer a “transparency” or “ambient” mode that uses the same mics to pipe outside sound in — handy for hearing announcements or holding a quick conversation without removing the headphones.

Which matters more?

For flights and commutes, ANC is the star (it kills engine drone). For open offices and chatty spaces, a good passive seal often does more against voices. The best headphones combine both: a tight passive seal plus hybrid ANC.

Bottom line: passive isolation blocks high frequencies with a physical seal; ANC erases low-frequency drones electronically. Match the tool to your noise — and know that no headphone fully silences sudden, high-pitched sound.
