Fast Charging Standards Explained: USB-PD, PPS, and Quick Charge
“Fast charging” only works when your charger, cable, and device all speak the same language. Here are the standards that matter and how to make sure you get full speed.
USB Power Delivery (USB-PD): the universal one
USB-PD is the widely adopted fast-charging standard over USB-C, used by phones, tablets, and laptops alike. It negotiates higher voltages to deliver more power safely, scaling from phone-sized wattages up to 100W+ for laptops. If you want one standard to rely on, it’s PD.
PPS: smarter, cooler PD
PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is an extension of USB-PD that adjusts voltage in tiny steps in real time. This lets the charger match the battery precisely, charging faster while generating less heat. Several modern phones need a PD + PPS charger to hit their advertised top speeds.
Quick Charge and proprietary standards
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge is common on Android devices (newer versions align with USB-PD/PPS). Some brands also use their own systems (e.g., very high-wattage proprietary charging), which usually require that brand’s own charger and cable to reach peak speed — a third-party charger will fall back to a slower standard.
Why you might not be getting full speed
- Mismatch: the charger must support the standard your device uses (e.g., PPS). A generic PD brick may only deliver a slower profile.
- The cable matters: higher-wattage charging needs a cable rated for it; a thin or old USB-C cable can bottleneck power.
- Wattage headroom: a charger rated well above your phone’s need still only delivers what the phone requests — but it won’t limit you either.
Bottom line: for the broadest compatibility get a USB-PD charger with PPS and a properly rated USB-C cable — that combination fast-charges the widest range of phones, tablets, and laptops.
