Display Specs Decoded: Nits, Refresh Rate, and What Actually Matters
A spec sheet for a monitor, TV, or phone screen reads like a wall of numbers competing to sound impressive. Only a few of them change how the screen feels in daily use, and which few depends entirely on what you do with it. Here’s how to read the sheet and spend your money where your eyes will notice.
Brightness: nits, and why they matter more outdoors
Brightness is measured in nits (candelas per square metre). A typical indoor screen sits around 250–350 nits, which is fine in a normal room. Step into sunlight and that same screen washes out; phones you use outdoors benefit from 800 nits or more. For HDR content to look like actual HDR rather than a marketing checkbox, you generally want a display that can hit at least 600 nits, ideally higher, because HDR is about bright highlights standing out against dark tones.
Refresh rate: smoothness, in hertz
Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws, in hertz. Sixty hertz has been standard for years and is perfectly readable. Ninety, 120, or 144 Hz make scrolling, animation, and motion look noticeably smoother, and gamers chasing fast response go higher still. The gain from 60 to 120 is easy to see; the gain from 120 to 240 is real but subtle and mostly matters for competitive gaming.
Response time and refresh rate are not the same thing
Response time, quoted in milliseconds, is how quickly a pixel can change colour. A low response time reduces the smeary trail behind fast-moving objects. A high refresh rate with a sluggish response time still ghosts, so both numbers matter for motion. Manufacturers quote response time under flattering conditions, so treat it as a rough comparison, not a guarantee.
Panel type shapes everything else
The underlying panel technology drives colour, contrast, and viewing angle more than any single number. IPS panels give accurate colour and wide viewing angles, good for design and general use. VA panels offer deeper contrast but narrower angles. OLED gives true blacks and per-pixel lighting for the best contrast, at a higher price and with some care needed around static images. TN panels are cheap and fast but weak on colour and angles.
Resolution and the size it lives on
Resolution (1080p, 1440p, 4K) only means something relative to screen size and how close you sit. 4K on a phone is largely wasted; 1080p stretched across a large desktop monitor looks soft. What your eye cares about is pixel density — pixels packed per inch — so match resolution to size rather than buying the biggest number.
The short version
For desk work and reading, prioritise resolution and an IPS panel. For gaming, prioritise refresh rate and response time. For movies and HDR, prioritise contrast (OLED or a strong VA) and peak brightness. Almost nobody needs to max out every spec at once — pick the two that match your use and let the rest be “good enough.”
