Mechanical Keyboard Switches Explained: Linear, Tactile, and Clicky
The “switch” under each key is what gives a mechanical keyboard its feel and sound. There are three broad families, plus a couple of specs worth understanding before you buy.
The three switch types
Linear
Linear switches move straight down with a smooth, consistent press and no bump — quiet and fast. They’re popular with gamers because rapid presses feel effortless. (Cherry MX Red and similar are linears.)
Tactile
Tactile switches add a small “bump” partway down so you can feel when the key registers, without a loud click. Many typists prefer them for the feedback. (Cherry MX Brown is the classic tactile.)
Clicky
Clicky switches have the tactile bump plus an audible click at the actuation point. Satisfying to some, annoying to officemates. (Cherry MX Blue is the well-known clicky.)
Two specs to know
- Actuation force (measured in grams) — how hard you press before the key registers. Lighter (~45g) feels effortless; heavier (~60g+) resists accidental presses.
- Actuation point & travel — how far the key moves before it registers, and its total depth. Gaming switches often actuate higher/faster.
Which should you pick?
For gaming, many choose light linears for speed. For typing, tactiles give helpful feedback without noise. Choose clicky only if you love the sound and won’t disturb anyone. If you can, test a switch tester or a friend’s board — feel is personal.
Bottom line: linear = smooth and quiet, tactile = a felt bump, clicky = bump plus sound. Match the switch to whether you mostly game or type, and to how much noise you can live with.
