Gaming mice advertise sky-high DPI and polling numbers, but bigger isn’t always better. Here’s what the specs mean and which ones actually affect your aim.

DPI / CPI: sensitivity, not quality

DPI (dots per inch), sometimes called CPI, is how far the cursor moves for a given hand movement. A 26,000-DPI mouse sounds impressive, but almost nobody plays that high — most gamers use 400–1600 DPI and adjust in-game sensitivity. A high maximum is fine to have, but it’s not a measure of quality; precision and consistency matter more than the peak number.

Polling rate (Hz): how often it reports

Polling rate is how frequently the mouse tells your PC where it is. 1000Hz (once per millisecond) has been the standard for years and is plenty for nearly everyone. Newer mice offer 4,000 or 8,000Hz, which can slightly reduce latency but demands more from your CPU and USB — a nice-to-have, not a must.

Sensor: optical vs laser

Modern gaming mice use optical sensors, which are accurate and consistent on most surfaces (a mousepad is still ideal). Older laser sensors could track on glass but were more prone to acceleration and jitter. For gaming, a good optical sensor is the standard today.

What actually matters for feel

• Weight: lighter mice (under ~70g) are popular for fast flick aiming.
• Wired vs wireless: top wireless gaming mice now match wired latency — the old “wireless is laggy” concern is largely gone.
• Shape and grip: the most underrated spec — it has to fit your hand and grip style.

Bottom line: don’t chase the biggest DPI. A quality optical sensor, 1000Hz+ polling, a comfortable shape, and a weight you like matter far more than headline numbers.
