“IP68 water resistant” sounds reassuring, but what does it actually promise? IP ratings are a standardized way to describe how well a device resists dust and water — and understanding the two digits helps you avoid an expensive mistake.

What the two digits mean

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating has the form IP followed by two numbers, e.g. IP68.

  • First digit — solids/dust (0–6): how well the device keeps out particles. A 6 is the top rating: fully dust-tight.
  • Second digit — water (0–9): how well it resists water. A 7 means it survives temporary immersion (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes). An 8 means immersion beyond 1 meter, to a depth and time the manufacturer specifies.

An “X” in place of a digit (like IPX7) just means that property wasn’t formally tested — common on earbuds, which are rated for water but not dust.

IP67 vs IP68: the real difference

Both are dust-tight (the “6”). The difference is water depth. IP67 is tested to 1 meter for 30 minutes; IP68 goes deeper — but “deeper” is defined by the manufacturer, so one IP68 phone might be rated to 1.5 m and another to 6 m. Always check the brand’s stated depth and time; the rating alone doesn’t tell you the exact limit.

What water resistance does NOT cover

This is where people get burned:

  • It’s tested in fresh, still water. Saltwater, pool chlorine, soap, and coffee can damage seals and are usually not covered.
  • Pressure matters. IP ratings use still water. Swimming, jet-ski spray, or a hard shower stream can force water past seals rated only for calm immersion.
  • Resistance fades with age. Seals and adhesives degrade, and drops can crack them. A two-year-old IP68 phone is not as watertight as a new one.
  • Warranties often exclude water damage even on “water-resistant” devices — check before you trust it.

Practical takeaway

Treat IP67/IP68 as protection against accidents — rain, a dropped-in-the-sink moment, sweat — not as an invitation to swim. If you want a device for actual swimming or diving, look for one explicitly marketed for that use with a stated depth rating, not just an IP number.

Bottom line: the first digit is dust, the second is water; IP68 resists deeper immersion than IP67, but always confirm the manufacturer’s exact depth — and remember these ratings are for clean, still water and weaken over time.
