Drop your phone on a pad and it charges — but the labels (Qi, Qi2, MagSafe) and the speeds can be confusing. Here’s what actually matters.

Qi: the universal standard

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the near-universal wireless charging standard, used by virtually every phone that charges wirelessly. It works by inductive charging: a coil in the pad creates a magnetic field that a coil in your phone converts back into power. Because it’s a standard, a Qi phone works on any Qi pad.

Qi2 and MagSafe: adding magnets

The biggest weakness of plain Qi is alignment — if the coils don’t line up, charging is slow or stops. MagSafe (Apple’s system) solved this with a ring of magnets that snap the phone into perfect position. Qi2 is the newer open standard that builds that same magnetic alignment into Qi, so Android and iPhone can both benefit. If your phone and charger are Qi2/MagSafe, alignment is automatic.

Speed: wireless is slower than a cable

Wireless charging is convenient, not fast. Typical pads deliver 5–15W, and even “fast” wireless tops out well below what a wired USB-PD charger does. Some of the energy is also lost as heat during the coil-to-coil transfer, which is why phones and pads get warm.

Practical tips

• Alignment is everything on non-magnetic pads — a phone that’s off-center charges slowly.
• Thick or metal cases can block or weaken charging; magnetic/MagSafe-compatible cases work best.
• Don’t leave coins, keys, or cards on the pad — metal objects can heat up.
• For overnight charging, wireless is perfect; for a fast top-up before you leave, grab a cable.

Bottom line: Qi is the universal base, Qi2/MagSafe add magnets for foolproof alignment, and wireless trades some speed for convenience. Great for your desk or nightstand — a cable is still faster in a hurry.
