You’ve probably seen chargers advertised as “GaN” and wondered whether it’s marketing or a real upgrade. It’s real — and it mostly comes down to a different material inside the charger.

What GaN actually is

GaN stands for gallium nitride, a semiconductor that replaces the silicon used in traditional chargers. GaN can handle higher voltages and switch faster with less wasted energy as heat. The practical result: a GaN charger can deliver the same power as an older silicon brick while running cooler and being noticeably smaller and lighter. That’s why a modern GaN charger can push 65W from something barely larger than the little 5W cube that used to come with phones.

Do you need one?

You don’t need GaN to charge a device, but the benefits are convenience and heat: smaller size for travel, and often multiple ports in one compact unit. If you carry a laptop, tablet, and phone, a single multi-port GaN charger can replace three separate bricks.

How much wattage do you need?

Wattage is what determines charging speed (as long as your device supports it). Rough guidance:

  • Phones: 20–30W covers fast charging for nearly all modern phones. More watts won’t help a phone that caps lower.
  • Tablets: 30–45W.
  • Ultrabooks / 13-inch laptops: 65W is the sweet spot.
  • Larger / performance laptops: 100W+ (some need 140W).

A higher-wattage charger is safe to use with a lower-power device — the device only draws what it’s designed to take. So a 65W GaN charger will fast-charge your phone and handle a laptop.

Two things to check

First, look for USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) support — that’s the standard most phones and laptops use for fast charging. Second, remember that with multi-port chargers, the total wattage is usually shared: a “65W” two-port charger might deliver 45W + 18W when both ports are in use, not 65W each. Check the fine print if you plan to charge two demanding devices at once.

Bottom line: GaN is a genuine improvement — same power, smaller and cooler. Buy for the wattage your most demanding device needs (65W is the do-everything pick), make sure it supports USB-PD, and you’ll cover your whole kit with one charger.
