How to Read Projector Specs: Lumens, Native Resolution, and Throw Distance
Projector spec sheets are full of big, tempting numbers — and some of them are misleading. Here’s how to read them so you buy the right one for your room.
Lumens: brightness (measured honestly)
Lumens describe how bright the projector is. The catch: budget projectors often quote inflated “lumens” or made-up units. The trustworthy measure is ANSI lumens. As a rough guide, a dark room can look great with 1,000–2,000 ANSI lumens, while a room with ambient light needs more. If a cheap projector claims “12,000 lumens” with no “ANSI,” treat that number with heavy skepticism.
Native vs supported resolution
This trips up a lot of buyers. Native resolution is the projector’s actual pixel count; supported resolution is just the highest signal it can accept and downscale. A projector that “supports 4K” but has a native 1080p (or lower) panel will not show true 4K detail. Always look for the native figure.
Throw distance and throw ratio
Throw ratio tells you how big an image you get at a given distance. A standard-throw projector might need ~8–10 feet for a 100-inch image, while a short-throw model makes the same image from just a few feet — essential for small rooms. Check the throw ratio against your available space before buying.
Contrast and the rest
Contrast ratio affects how deep blacks look (again, real-world contrast is usually lower than the marketing number). Also consider brightness uniformity, built-in speakers vs external audio, and whether it has the smart apps or ports you need.
Bottom line: buy on ANSI lumens for your lighting, native resolution for real sharpness, and throw ratio for your room size — not the biggest number on the box.
